  • Torenia fournieri is also known as Wishbone Flower or Bluewings. It is a summer annual that does well placed in partial shade in warm, humid climates. In northern climates, it would do best in full sun. It is a low-growing plant, reaching 6 8 inches in height, and it has a long bloom season, late spring through fall.
  • Torenia is a low growing plant only reaching 6 - 8 inches in height. It grows as an annual in USDA zones 6 - 8 or as an indoor house plant.
  • The plant is a compact bush and does well planted in mass in the front of the summer border or in containers. This seed mix will have blooms with shades of pink, white, lavender and purple. The blooms are trumpet-shaped and measure about 1 inch across.
  • Sow 4 - 5 seeds per plant. In the spring, start the seed indoors 10 weeks before the last expected frost date. This annual is not as fast growing as most, so they need some extra time to establish before setting outdoors after frost danger has passed. Press the seed into the soil, do not cover the seed, and keep it moist. With a temperature range of 70 - 75F, germination is normally within 30 days.
  • Space plants 6 9 inches apart. Pinch the stems back to encourage more branching and bushiness. Torenia is not drought tolerant, so give it adequate water and fertilize every couple of weeks with a fertilizer high in potassium to encourage blooming.
